John Williston, Consultant, Edmonton Metro, understands that the "personal touch" is the key to success.
More than a decade ago, John Williston left hometown Edmonton to "temporarily" visit his vacationing girlfriend in Yellowknife. He's still there, permanently and happily settled with his wife, Donna (yes, that girlfriend), his kids (Meghan, 10 and Sierra, 7)-and a thriving practice that encompasses hundreds of thousand of miles.
"Donna and I simply grew to love the place. I had careers as a business owner and senior government official and have always been very active in the community-so when I joined Investors Group in 1996, I was already well-known and that certainly helped."
In addition to the city of Yellowknife (population 20,000) John's practice also includes the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Territory and yet he manages to keep in close contact with all his clients. "Locally, I meet with my clients as frequently as possible. For those farther away, I'm constantly in touch by phone, fax and e-mail and I make it a point to meet with them when they funnel through the Yellowknife's central airport on work assignments or personal trips."
