In Their Own Words: Peter Eby, CFP

Three Generations of the Eby Family Have helped IG Clients Achieve Their Financial Goals

Peter Eby, CFP, Senior Financial Consultant, Winnipeg, uses his personal investment experience to build stronger client relationships.

In 1931, Peter Eby's father, George, signed on as one of IG's first Consultants. Peter's been with IG for 42 years, his daughter, Charla, is his associate and his son, Rob, was a part of IG for eight years.

"After spending 23 at years at head office, I shifted to the sales force because of my father. When I was a youngster, I contracted polio—I'm fine now—but that illness made me a captive audience for Dad who would 'sell' me on financial planning the Investors Group way. He obviously did a great job."

George Eby preached the value of strong personal relationships with clients — and Peter is an absolute believer the personal approach is best. "Because I've built up strong relationships with my clients, they know I'll give them the straight goods. I even show them my own statements to emphasize that I don't do anything differently than I advise them to do."

"I take them through the mid-70s economic crisis to prove patience pays, I show that a $100,000 investment left in the Standard & Poor's 500 would have rebounded to $244,437 after 10 years compared to just $93,464 for those who pulled their money out of the market and put it into fixed income vehicles. So why sell?"

Peter also demonstrates that a portfolio drop of just 10% compared to the index means the balance in a portfolio has actually worked. And Peter's personal approach has been successful. His client base has remained stable and committed — to him and Investors Group.
