Career transition made easier

Wayne Cadogan, CFP, Regional Director, Winnipeg Downtown

Once you've been a part of a high-performance team, you tend to be drawn to other elite groups of people.

While playing in the Canadian Football League as a defensive back for the Montreal Alouettes, Wayne knew he eventually had to prepare for life after the game. The combination of a serious foot injury and the temporary end to the franchise in 1987 forced a serious examination of his options. After researching the possibilities, Wayne knew that he wanted to pursue a career in financial services, and his research led him to Investors Group.

Wayne began his Investors Group career in August of 1988 when he joined as a Consultant.

“I wanted to be associated with a firm that was a proven industry leader. In addition, I wanted to work with a firm that had the courses and platform to facilitate my ongoing development over the long term,” Wayne says.

He became a Division Director in January 1991 in the Winnipeg West region and was appointed Regional Director of the Winnipeg Downtown office in January 1998.

Much like in football, when a player becomes the coach, Wayne relished the opportunity to move into the Regional Director role.

“I needed no enticement as it was a role that I wanted from the time I understood the opportunity,” Wayne says. “The most rewarding aspect of my position is when I see the success of our consultants and knowing you played a role in helping them achieve that success.”

Wayne was also drawn to Investors Group because of its reputation as a Caring Company.

“I was brought up in Winnipeg's inner city,” he says. “It was tough for us, especially my mom. I know first hand what it means to people in those circumstances to get some tangible assistance.”

There are three bursaries in Wayne's name in the Physical Education and Recreation Department at the University of Manitoba where he starred as a defensive back with the Bison football squad.

When you look at the criteria for the award, you realize the high standards that Wayne set during his time at the U of M.

  • One award each is offered to a student participating in the Bison football, track and field, and basketball programs; must have completed full second year of any degree-credit program with a minimum C.G.P.A. of 3.0; enrolled with a full course-load in the next year; demonstrates financial need.

Investors Group became lead sponsor of a Habitat for Humanity project that built a total of four homes in Winnipeg. Virtually all 85 people from Wayne's Downtown office became involved, with one new residence in particular. Consultants and staff pitched in to raise $60,000.

Wayne's recent community work included volunteer positions with United Way, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Asper School of Business.

In 2004 the Winnipeg Downtown office committed $30,000 to purchase a sailboat for Disabled Sail Manitoba. The boat is named IG Spirit of Manitoba. This boat allows paraplegics and quadriplegics to race and sail using a breath control instrument.

The Winnipeg Downtown office contributed more than $60,000 to different charities in 2004 under Wayne's direction.

Wayne received the top honour among Regional Directors in 2005, as he was named the Regional Director of the Year for 2004. This prestigious award goes to the Regional Director who demonstrates all of the traits and business results necessary to succeed in one of the most competitive industries in Canada.

While Wayne was humbled by the honour, he says the bottom line is achieving team goals. Like winning the top prize in the CFL, the historic Grey Cup, Wayne puts an emphasis on the collective good of his entire region office.

“As a Regional Director you always have business goals for your region. However, the overall success of your team gives you the most satisfaction.”
